The Collaboration We Never Knew We Needed from The Adams and Basboi

How many times did I play the song Timur by The Adams when it was first released, you ask? I bet it’s too many to count. I may not have been the biggest fan of the band, but they’ve always held a special place in my heart since I first heard them in the Janji Joni movie soundtrack. After the massive hit Konservatif, The Adams went through a lot—from being one of the most popular bands to perform at high school or college events to collaborating with Weezer on stage in Bali.

After the devastating news about two of their members, Pandu and Ghina, leaving the band in January 2024, we finally have something new from The Adams—a unique collaboration with Indonesian rapper Basboi. This marks the band’s first official collaboration, while for Basboi, it’s the fourth single from his upcoming second album, set to release this October. The song is a perfect blend of both artists, with just the right amount of Basboi’s rap and The Adams’ signature sound. Neither dominates the track; instead, they complement each other beautifully.

Itu Aku could easily be the anthem for young people working far from home to provide for their families, —what we call Anak Rantau. It tells the story of someone living in the bustling capital city (specifically Jakarta), chasing career opportunities for a better future. The song evokes a warm feeling, one you get when you’re exhausted or homesick, but you remember the reason you’re doing it in the first place. It’s both sweet and melancholic, depending on your personal experience.

When Basboi first created the song, he immediately felt it had a The Adams vibe, which led him to propose the collaboration. It’s a smart move for The Adams to stay relevant with younger audiences, especially since they’ve never done a collaboration before. Here’s hoping we see more surprises from them in the future!
